Fire Dance

Fire Dance

You danced for me last night
And as the daylight faded

Took an ember from the fire and breathed into it some life

Tracing a filigree of flames you picked your way between
Muscles and sinews telling of long traditions of pain
And gazing in to the dancing flame I became
Transfixed, transported back down the pathways of time.

Drums beating out the tempo of blood
Your cloak gathered in the darkness
And the fire played merrily on your cheeks and brow
A diadem of death.

Dance on in murky dreamscape
On the floor of long ago
Many the centuries that have passed
But the warmth of the fire still glows
