THE E AND C

Posters on subways and trees in cages
Signposts that nobody reads.
Subway painted with scenes from Africa
Jungle where nobodies been.

Square blocks and square towers
A concrete jungle
Monument to Bauhaus extreme.
Images etched on pieces of plastic
No litter just a coca cola canteen.

Sunday’s silent sentinels
March by in endless rows.
They’re heading for the subway
Its down there that everybody goes.

Write your party piece upon a wall
Etch it in the sky.
Scratch it in the dust trails
Epitaphs to times gone by.

They’re sitting in the subways
They’re lying in the streets
They’re drinking from the cup of pain
Pay them for the treat.

The pachyderm is watching
From his perch up high aloft
He sees the bipeds passing
Too late to look - it costs.

We can’t wait now for the train to come
We can’t watch the world go by
We have to be there yesterday

The time has long gone - why?
