Last week I was made admin of a group hoping to protect Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance payments in the UK. I duly E mailed 4500 members in a very cheery, non antagonistic, positive way.
The next morning I got up to quite a few E Mails saying thank you, and God bless you and xxx. Amongst these were two from a member who told me I didn't know what I was talking about and therefore should "Shut my Gob". I was indignant, I was angry, I was hurt. Above all I was hurt.
I am discovering lately that I have spent my life taking the blame for other peoples ignorance. I discovered recently that my sister does the same thing. As children we were taught to be ashamed., and we have spent our lives trying to shoulder the burden of blame. Well no more. I will not Shut my Gob. I have things to say and I think they are worth sharing.
My father used to say - Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me
It isn't true of course - I have a love of words - as I have a love of so much else.
The right words carry power
The right words give meaning and hope
The right words can soothe and heal
The right words are oil on troubled waters
Words can sing and dance, twinkle and shine, radiate and illuminate, effervesce and deliquesce.
So to all who would control through ignorance and thuggery, bullying and cowardice I say - Listen and you just might Learn Something
